Ombak Potehi will be performing in Japan in early November 2017. To raise funds for their subsistence in Tokyo, the group will perform 2 shows: The Monkey King Adventures and Kisah Pulau Pinang -The Penang Story. Come support the young apprentices who have been working hard and passionately to revive the Potehi in Penang.

2 stories, 30 minutes each total 1 hour, no intermission.

(1) The Monkey King Adventures – Guan-Im Takes the Red Boy as a Disciple (30 minutes)
A well-known episode from the novel Journey to the West, the legendary Tang dynasty monk and scholar named Tang Sam Tsong travels to the western regions of Central Asia to look for sacred Buddhist texts. He is accompanied by Sun Ngoo-khong, the Monkey King, Tu Pat Kai (Pigsy) and Sua Tseng (Friar Sandy). Gu Seng-eng, the son of the Bull Demon King, attacks them and kidnaps the monk. With the help of Kuan-im, the Goddess of Mercy, Sun Ngoo-khong defeats Gu in a series of spectacular battles. Gu Seng-eng is accepted as Ang Hai Li, a disciple of Kuan-im.

(2) Kisah Pulau Pinang – the Penang Story (30 minutes)
A tale of love and friendship juxtaposed against activities such as the lively spice trade, street festivals, pilgrims listening to talks at the mosque, secret society fights and dancing at the amusement parks in old Penang. Based on stories of the local communities, the performers reimagine life on the island of the betel nut in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, employing traditional Hokkien potehi glove puppets, local costumes, multiethnic languages and live music.
