Fred Cheah

Fred Cheah’s mother realised that he had a unique ability for music at a young age. He would listen to a song on the radio once and immediately be able to repeat the melodies. Fred started playing the guitar while still in school and joined bands such as the Shannons and the Twilights. He played bass for the Tyros for the famous Battle of the Bands in 1967, which Equinox won. (Incidentally, Fred also joined Equinox later.) He also performed in venues such as Sumi’s, Honeycomb, the Shanghai restaurant and the Latin Quarter with various bands, including Jungle Lynxs, Latin Quarter Resident band and the Beads who won the nationwide Radio Malaysia’s talentime contest in 1969. Fred left for Australia following his heart (Irene) and settled there. He continued his musical career perfoming in various bands (including Sidetrack) and teaching the guitar. Fred currently still performs on a regular basis in Melbourne and has released 2 albums.
