Join us for an afternoon of music and learning about ethnic instruments and the parts they play in modern contemporary music. Moderated by Berklee College of Music alumni, Wilson Quah, the workshop will showcase the talented M. Sivasilan on gendang and cajon, together with Jonathan Yee on shakuhachi, dongxiao, and kaval.

M. Sivasilan

M. Sivasilan started his drumming journey during his university days at Science University of Malaysia (B.Mus Performance and Pedagogy) where originally he was a brass player. Seeing his aptitude for rhythm, his lecturer assigned him to the drums. He has since performed in various concerts / festivals in Malaysia and neighboring regions such as the Sarawak Rainforest Festival and Samila Beach Jazz Festival (Thailand) to name a few. He also facilitates and participates in workshops and conferences for music education in schools and Universities. He currently is the drummer for Jeep Jazz Trio and Leader of the World Music Band – CultureShot besides sitting in with many other bands as well.

Jonathan Yee

Jonathan Yee took up the saxophone during his high school days and started performing at local venues at the age of 20. He has since performed with many bands including Tonal Alchemy, Ocean of Fire, and High Society. Besides the saxophone, Jonathan also has the interest in other musical instruments, both modern and traditional. Some of these traditional instruments include the Japanese Shakuhachi and Ryuteki, the Bulgarian Kaval, and the Chinese Dongxiao. He formed the band Kazashi back in 2013 as a vehicle to explore the fusion of elements of both traditional and modern music. Currently, Jonathan performs regularly in the Penang music scene.
